Help our children learn to love books and become independent readers
11 million Filipinos are functionally illiterate (they cannot read with comprehension) while 4 million have no basic literacy skills. And while most Filipino children do enroll in Grade 1, an estimated 55% of them will drop out without finishing high school.
Increased access to, and encouraging a love for books in public schools is needed to promote functional literacy, creative thinking and independent reading skills that are needed for future success.
Support CANVAS’ project Books for 3000 Children by donating and sharing the page and help bring original Filipino stories and artworks to public schools and children’s hospitals throughout the Philippines.

The Yellow Ribbon Campaign.
So, it’s been a year since yellow ribbons were tied almost everywhere to show love to former president Cory Aquino, who was then battling with cancer. How time flies. I still remember going to school with a yellow ribbon tied on my bag… and secretly tying yellow ribbons to other random people’s bags.
This is the result of averaging the colour values at each pixel for every regular (non-Sunday) Garfield strip from 2007. Buried in the blur you can notice some interesting features:
- The absolutely static 3-panel structure with a borderless panel in the middle.
- Jon tends to stand on the left and Garfield on the right.
- The dialogue is always lined up exactly in the same vertical location.

Wake Up World is the world’s first social alarm clock. The recently-developed iPhone app, which costs $0.99, supplies you with a username and secret code upon registering. You then share your secret code with other Wake Up World users, who can send you videos which appear at the time you set your alarm to “wake” you. One of the clever aspects of this app is that it’s inherently social and offers a built-in incentive for people to recommend the app to their loved ones, friends, or even strangers (chatroulette-style) for shared and surprising experiences.
